Feeling in the pink

I'm not feeling in the pink just now: I'm sick, so this is going to be a short one.

Does buying pink products or pink-ribboned items make you feel good because you're supporting the fight against breast cancer? This article suggests that you should do your homework before spending your money: the support you think you're giving may not be exactly what it seems.

Does ribbon-branding (whether it's pink or any other color) make you more inclined to buy a product? Why or why not?

Shuffling back to bed now. See you when I'm over the crud.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well, so many of us are falling ill! Darn this weather! (Yes, I'm still blaming the weather. Germs what?)

Feel better.

The only pink thing I don't want to see in my lifetime is: the pink slip. And I don't mean the one I wear under my skirts.

I'd give the money directly to the charity instead of purchasing something just because it's pink, or yellow or white.

Might do more good than buying something :)

Hope you feel better... I am totally sick as well, hacking and coughing.. BF is getting concerned

Unfortunately, the pink products just remind me of the "little girl" version of the "real" thing; so NO, the negative connotation kills it for me.

And I'd rather donate directly.

And I'm so sorry you are sick. Be Well Soon! *mwah*

Hope you get better soon! I guess the stress is also taking its toll. To answer your question, no, I don't give to charity in this way. I give a substantial amount each month to a homeless charity, by direct debit from my account.

I used to give to other charities as well, but had to stop due to my successive pay cuts.

My only charitable giving associated with merchadise is Oxfam Christmas cards.

One cool way of giving are those charity gifts, where you can contribute to projects online, and receive a gift certificate for the giftee. I find this works really well in memory of deceased people. Each year, I "give" my late father a Christmas gift of contributing to a development project of some sort in his name. Feels much less moribund than "in memory of", and achieves a great purpose!

It's always sad when a big corporation hijacks a good idea that a grass roots organization started and turns it into a marketing campaign. On me at least, it causes an opposite reaction. It's always the human stories that cause me to give.

Here in Vancouver, wearing pink on a certain day supports the stop bullying campaign, and I like that.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thanks, everyone - I appreciate the kind wishes and I'm glad that no one seems to be getting sucked into buying pink for all the wrong reasons.

Seeing a ribbon for something doesn't persuade me to buy the item that much. Usually, I prefer to contribute directly to the organization so that 100% of the money can be used for the cause.

I think that the yellow bracelets, the pink ribbons, and all of that are nice. They are, however, pretty much sentiment. I would rather give directly to the charity and let that lead them to work their magic. Giving directly also gives you the insurance that they get the whole sum, rather than just a cut of the proceeds.

I don't purchase the pink things because of their branding for charity. My main excitement in October is that there is SO much PINK stuff! I LOVE PINK! I got myself a whole bunch of pink skillets and pots last year. This year I am purchasing pink kitchen appliances. I am in pink heaven. It's nice that it also somewhat supports breast cancer, but I have to admit I love pink!
