The unluckiest woman in the gym
All she wore was a towel.
I stood in front of my locker, nearly down to my skivvies. Yoga class was over and I was headed for the steam room and then the shower.
The woman in the towel opened the unlocked locker a few feet down: empty. She opened the one next to it: empty. As she worked her way towards me, she got more and more agitated.
Lost something? I asked.
Yes. I was in the shower and now my clothes are gone!
She moved to the next row, flinging locker doors open faster and faster.
I didn't stick around to see how it ended, but it wasn't hard to guess what might have happened. When I went to lock up my own stuff, the first five unlocked lockers I opened all had clothes, shoes, and purses in them, completely unguarded.
I hope she just forgot where she stored her clothes. Getting clothes stolen during a class would be bad enough. Getting them stolen while in the shower? Unthinkable.
A good combination lock costs no more than ten bucks.
The peace of mind is worth it.

13 retorts. What say you?
Oh my! I hope it was a momentary memory loss and not a thief. :)
that's awful!! people leave their stuff unlocked all the time at my gym, too.
i'm way too paranoid to leave my stuff in an unlocked locker. i hope she found her stuff!
Ha! Or not. I'm sure she just mixed up where her locker was.
I had my wallet stolen out of my purse at the gym once (I stupidly left my purse unguarded on a bench for TWO SECONDS while I ran over to wash my hands) but I don't see why someone would steal someone else's clothes! Ick.
Unless perhaps she did something to piss someone off. I know I've gone into a rage many a time when people are inconsiderate in the jam-packed changing areas...
two comments:
1. This posted started really well.
2. Getting your clothes stolen is a real bitch. How do you get home exactly?
@ Frugal Zeitgeist,
Wow, I've heard of money and wallets stolen, but everything including clothing is new to me.
Hopefully, it was a practical joke by her friends.
Everyone - I hope it was just a matter of forgetting where she left her stuff and not theft. It seems like that's the most likely scenario, but the whole incident underscores the importance of not leaving personal items (especially anything containing personal identification!) unlocked.
Shadox, you never fail to crack me up.
This is exactly how my son got his cell phone stolen at school during gym. He got lazy and didn't use the lock I gave him. He said it takes too long to put on (and it's a dang WORD lock - not numbers!) Anyway. Lesson learned. I'm too paranoid to leave my stuff unlocked. I also hope this was a prank.

Hawa - I bet your son will never leave his locker open ever again. Sorry to hear about his loss. Ouch.
I've had the same gym locker for approximately 10 years. Definitely a good investment!
Did you offer to help her? to notify reception or look for her clothes?
It sounds like you didn't.
That along with your selfish paranoia regarding your highly responsible deceased accountant makes me think that you are not a very nice person.
Just because you are frugal you don't have to be mean!
Cents in the City - I agree. A locker is worth it!
MsMarmiteLover - You are right, I didn't respond to the gym situation as well as I could have in the moment. Thanks for the accountability.
Regarding the accounting situation: keep in mind that I've only told a very small part of the story here. The principals involved have a right to privacy and it's important to me to respect that. Thanks for commenting, though.
As I know from experience, having a combination lock doesn't help that much either. Best not to bring valuables to the gym at all, if you can help it.
